Carols with chemistry: schoolchildren from Donetsk Region participated in the 19th winter session of the International Green School

Jan. 31, 2018, 8:06 p.m.

Schoolchildren from Kramatorsk have visited the high-mountainous Carpathian village of Kosmach. They arrived at the 19th session of the International Green School (IGS), which lasted from January 12 to January 20, 2018. The organizers of the International Green School have prepared an interesting program on science, art, and local traditions.

Mini-volcanoes, reagents, and multicolored solvents... That is how interesting the chemistry lessons were in the International green school!
Students have learned:
- an electrical conductivity of different types of water
- what is radiation and how to measure it
- how to determine the concentration of food dye
- how to get a fire without matches
- and we had a lot of exciting experiments!

Chemistry lessons were held by Yuriy Khalavka and Andriy Kanak who are the members of the Chernivtsi National University.

" Children in the International Green School are very motivated and many of them really showed interest in things we demonstrated them: experiments, some applied things in chemistry. It is really pleasant", - Yuriy Khalavka noted. He emphasized that when children engaged in experiments themselves and did something with their own hands, they began to like learning and it became very interesting for them.

Also the specialists in robotics, namely the members of the Kolomyia Polytechnic College visited the International green school, showed a model of a smart home and a mini-robot to the children, and explained how they work.

At the end of the scientific program, members of the Vasyl Stefanyk Precarpathian National University Oleg Lushchak and Igor Yurkevych held the biochemistry lessons. The pupils saw the molecules of their DNA and observed the cyclic chemical reaction.

Special attention was paid to studying English along with Janine Winn, the volunteer from the United States Peace Corps. Together with Janine, the children composed words, improved their pronunciation, read fairy tales, played games, and even set the play titled "Little Red Riding Hood." And all this was in English!
" I really liked Speaking club! I have never talked to foreigners. It was so interesting to play games and listen to fairy tales in English. I would like to become an interpreter, so for me, it was a very good experience", - Arina Soboleva, one of the participants of the International green school, shared her impressions of communication with Janine.

Informational coordinator of the IGS Angelina Baryluk gave a workshop on journalism and told about its foundations, trends, and interesting techniques.

Also, the students attended a master-class in project management, where they developed and presented three projects on technology, art, and ecology.

In parallel with the study, the children became acquainted with local customs and were engaged in art. Director of the Kosmach-Stavnyk school Oksana Lyndiuk told about traditions, folk costumes, and carols of Kosmach. During the stay at the International Green School children:

- painted Kosmach pysanka (Easter Eggs),
- made cheese grasshoppers,
- made straw spiders,
- studied Hutsul dances,
- made varenyky with cheese, poppy seeds, halvah, and berries,
- held an evening of talents,
- visited the "Museum of Oleksa Dovbush," "Museum of sheep breeding," and the Kolomyia Museum "Pysanka,"
- listened to the play of Hutsul musical instruments in the studio,
- watched a wonderful Mass of Christ in the local church,
- dressed different costumes and sang the carols!

The students also went down the snow slides, played snowballs, and walked to the waterfall.
At the end of the session, the children prepared a final evening. They created an unforgettable cozy atmosphere: sang Ukrainian songs, read the poems by heart, and danced! They also shared impressions of the International Green School with each other and promised to come back!
